When a lower section of a roof does not extend past the wall that it is adjacent to but rather terminates within the wall plane, kick-out flashing is required. Below is an example where kick-out flashing should have been used but was not.
Without kick-out flashing in place in this location, water will run down the roof and behind the siding resulting in moisture damage to the wall including rot and potentially mold and structural damage.
