In the many Edmonton home inspections and surrounding area home inspections we have performed, almost every deck has some problems and most have many problems.  According to InterNACHI, "more than 2 million decks are built and replaced each year in North America", and it is estimated that less than half of the approximately 45 milliion existing decks are completely safe.
 
Many injuries and even some fatalities related to decks occur every year with many coming as a result of structural failure or collapse.  Many of the common problems we find on decks include: ledger boards improperly secured to the house; no ledger board flashing; untreated lumber in contact with the ground; inadequately supported posts; improper post to beam connections; loose railings; and more.
 
In summary, make sure your deck is safe for you, your family, and your friends.  Spring is here and summer is approaching so if you are unsure if your deck is safe, please have it inspected.
